Hot Airline Companies To Own In Right Now

Most major U.S. airlines reported second-quarter earnings last week, and profitability generally met or exceeded expectations. From a unit revenue perspective, most airlines had a rough spring, but this was offset by a significant year-over-year decline in fuel prices.

However, oil prices have begun to rise once again, and Gulf Coast jet fuel prices have climbed by $0.20 per gallon since the end of June. As a result, airlines will need revenue growth to accelerate this summer and beyond in order to deliver further earnings improvement. Fortunately, all of the major airlines have seen relatively strong demand for the summer season, and most expect to see unit revenues continue to increase this fall. This should allow the airlines to maintain their recent earnings momentum.

Summer demand looks strong
Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL  ) has been at or near the top of the industry in terms of unit revenue growth for the past two years. The carrier saw very strong demand around the July 4 holiday, which is helping to drive an expected 3% improvement in unit revenue for July. Management expects unit revenue for the rest of the quarter to improve in a similar fashion, as Delta continues to gain share in the corporate market.

The comforting fact about many of these charges, if there is one, is that they're usually optional. You don't have to buy a $3 bottle of water from Spirit Airlines (NASDAQ: SAVE  ) or pay $17 to $25 for a pillow and blanket from Allegiant Travel (NASDAQ: ALGT  ) if you don't want to -- and they're often confined to a single airline. However, one charge is slowly infiltrating the sector that may soon become commonplace and promises to be a game-changer -- namely, the carry-on baggage fee.

Another key point to Southwest's success has been its constant focus on giving the customer top value among domestic carriers. You'll certainly find a cheaper upfront ticket price if you look around for domestic flights from a small regional carrier like Allegiant Travel (NASDAQ: ALGT  ) or Spirit Airlines (NASDAQ: SAVE  ) . Then again, Southwest doesn't charge for the first two checked bags, whereas Allegiant and Spirit charge for both each checked bag as well as carry-on bags! Southwest's keep-it-simple approach and easy-to-understand pricing have been instrumental in winning over passengers.

At 9.5 times forward earnings, Alaska Air is priced far cheaper than another grower,Allegiant Air Travel Group (NASDAQ: ALGT  ) , which trades at more than 14 times earnings. Allegiant Air does operate a large travel booking service, which may warrant higher valuations, but the core airline business does not have as attractive long-term metrics as Alaska Air's. Another favorite among investors and travelers, JetBlue, trades much closer to Alaska Air at 9.4 times forward earnings. I like both companies, but am more attracted to Alaska's growth prospects as it is still mainly a West Coast airline with plenty of room for expansion.
