Coach's bad times started when the company declared disappointing second-quarter results in late January. Its North American comps declined 13.6% while its overall revenue dropped 6%.

Coach could not escape the adverse climate conditions that prevailed in the U.S., while competition from Kors and Spade also throttled its growth.

Challenges in China
China was the only bright spot for Coach; its total sales in the region grew 25% and its comparable-store sales rose at a double-digit rate.     Car parts retailer AutoZone (AZO) has been riding some big secular tailwinds for the last few years. As I write, the average passenger vehicle on the road in the U.S. today is 11.4 years old, the oldest average fleet age since automotive data firm Polk began collecting stats. With older cars on the road, costs to keep those cars running are climbing too – and that's helping to drive sales at AutoZone.

    AutoZone owns close to 4,700 stores across the U.S., and the firm has been expanding its reach into Latin America in recent years, with another 300 locations in Mexico and four Brazilian locations. It's not just do-it-yourselfers that frequent AutoZone's stores; the firm has more than 3,000 commercial counters inside its retail stores, providing parts for repair shops and service stations. That double-pronged approach means that AZO is able to book part sales for smaller DIY jobs alongside repair jobs that need to be done at a shop.

    The decision to expand into Mexico provides some big growth opportunities at AZO, as does its much smaller position in Brazil.     The employment report and continuing concerns in Ukraine dominated headlines, but there were still some individual stocks making news. Big Lots� (NYSE: BIG  ) shares exploded today, moving up 23% on a strong earnings report. The closeout retailer posted earnings of $1.45 per share, down from a profit of $2.08, but better than estimates at $1.40. Revenue fell 6%, to $1.64 billion, above expectations of $1.41 billion, and same-store sales dropped 3%. Big Lots also said it would complete the closure of its Canadian stores in the current quarter, and projected EPS of $0.40-$0.45, below estimates at $0.50, and full-year per-share profit of $2.25-$2.45, within the range of estimates at $2.44. Same-store sales are projected to be flat to 2%. Big Lots' surge seems to speak to the market's low expectations for retailers this quarter, but Big Lots' flat growth makes it unlikely that investors will see many more days like this.

    Job creation last month was shockingly weak, but analysts couldn't really explain why –- other than to blame the weather -- which left investors unsure how to react Friday. Many analysts say the numbers are likely to be revised higher next month, and in the end, market reaction was muted. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) lost ground for a third straight day, declining nearly 8 points, but the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) added 4, and the Nasdaq composite index (^IXIC) rose 18 points. Target (TGT) lost more than a point after saying the data breach that began on Black Friday was much worse than previously thought. The company now says as many as 70 million customers had personal information stolen. Target also lowered its fourth quarter outlook, partly because sales slumped after the data breach was first revealed. Sears (SHLD) tumbled by around 13.5 percent. It expects a big quarterly loss as sales fell during the holiday shopping season. Several smaller, specialty retailers also fell: Pacific Sunwear (PSUN) slid 16 percent, Five Below (FIVE) fell 7 percent, Shoe Carnival (SCVL) lost 5 percent, and Conn's (CONN) lost 2 percent. But Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) jumped 12 percent. It raised its earnings forecast as sales were not as bad as expected. Elsewhere, Alcoa (AA) fell about 5.5 percent. It's not quite the economic bellwether it used to be, but the aluminum giant still matters, and its net came in a bit shy of expectations. Fast Retailing said that while its Uniqlo brand was doing great business, weakness for its J Brand luxury demin label helped send September-May profit down 4% and prompted another cut to Fast's full-year outlook.     LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Stocks in Japan started with losses Friday, the final session before the release of the closely watched U.S. jobs report later in the day. The Nikkei Stock Average (JP:NIK) shed 0.3% to 15,836.37, as the yen edged higher against the U.S. dollar overnight, and the broader Topix gave up 0.5%. Tech issues were mostly lower, including a 3.3% pullback in Trend Micro Inc. (JP:4704) (TMICY) , and a 2.7% decline in Nintendo Co. (JP:7974) (NTDOF) . Nintendo shares rallied Thursday after China temporarily lifted a ban on manufacturing and selling video game consoles within in the country. But among Friday's best performers were shares of Fast Retailing Co. (JP:9983) (FRCOF) , up 4.4% after the company posted a nearly 9% rise in its fiscal first-quarter net profit to 楼41.85 billion ($399 million). Sales were driven by a nearly 80% gain in Fast Retailing's overseas sales at Uniqlo stores.
