The long-waged soda wars between Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO ) and PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP ) have taken an interesting turn that investors should carefully consider. While it's easy to group the two soda juggernauts together as equals, there are stark differences in leadership direction forming, and each company has made a decision on its future trajectory.

Shares of PepsiCo (PEP) were in the black Thursday, as the beverage giant logged higher-than-anticipated first-quarter profit and sales.
Pepsi said it earned $1.22 billion, or 79 cents a share, one dime higher than the year-ago period. Adjusted earnings were 83 cents a share, ahead of the 75 cents the Street was expecting. Revenue edged upward to $12.62 billion, coming in just ahead of the $12.4 billion consensus.
While beverage volume was flat, snack products saw a 2% gain.
In North America, Pepsi food business saw sales rise 1.3%, and beverages revenue inched upward, helped by sales of noncarbonated offerings, as carbonated drinks saw a 1% decline in volume in the region.
Outside the U.S., European sales rose 1%, while revenue fell 4.6% in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Morningstar R. J. Hottovy maintained a Hold rating and $88 price target on the stock, but was largely upbeat about the quarter, writing that it highlighted the firm strong portfolio of snack products and pricing power in the beverage market.
Frito-Lay North America enjoyed 4% organic revenue growth, led by mid-single-digit gains in U.S. salty snacks and price increases across the portfolio. Similarly, Pepsi Americas Beveragespositive price actions and growth in non-carbonated drinks helped to offset further volume declines in North American soda and difficult performance in Mexico. For PepsiCo in sum, price increases added three percentage points of growth in the quarter. In our opinion, this disciplined price performance highlights the company solid brand intangible assets, and we continue to believe that management long-run mid-single-digit revenue growth target is appropriate.
The firm also provided further details on its productivity goals, noting that the $1 billion of annual savings (roughly 1.5% of 2013 revenue) planned for the next five years is meant to offset labor cost inflation, negative mix impacts from emer

We believe that companies that have low capital intensity and low cyclicality like Coke (KO) Pepsi (PEP), or Proctor & Gamble (PG) have the ability to earn some of the highest returns. What youe looking for is both the low asset requirements and low cyclicality. It is at its best when a company sells a disposable product or a recurring service. We also like to see a large market share.

Finally, legal alternatives to "getting high" should see a boost -- namely, spirit producers. Since most drugs are traceable in the human body for weeks and alcohol tends to leave your system long before 24 hours is up, domestic beer behemoths such as Anheuser-Busch InBev and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP ) , as well as hard-liquor producers such as Brown-Forman, the maker of Jack Daniels and Southern Comfort, should be primed to benefit. For the domestic beer producers, this would be an incredibly welcome sign, as stagnant take-home pay has weighed heavily on beer consumption.

The brewing industry is a big industry in the U.S., and with the booming craft beer industry, companies like and Boston Beer (SAM), Molson Coors Brewing (TAP) and Constellation Brands (STZ) are bright growth opportunities for investors. As reported by The Brewers Association report in mid 2013, craft beer is moving ahead with 15% growth in dollar sales and 13% growth in volumes. But as the craft beer industry has lot of room to grow, brands like Boston Beer and Constellation can see improved market share in the future.

Bud Light may still be America's best-selling beer -- it has been for more than a decade -- but retail sales of this and other leading lower-calorie lagers such as Bud Light Lime, Miller Lite, and Natural (aka Natty) Light, declined in 2013, according to data from IRI, a Chicago market research firm. Not that this spells the end of light beers, which still make up a significant chunk of the market. Even as big brewers push into the craft segment, some big-name labels are still experiencing an uptick. Case sales of Coors Light, which became the No. 2 beer brand in the U.S. in 2012, grew nearly 1.8 percent last year, according to IRI. Michelob Ultra Light sales were also up, although it is an outlier in a fast-declining Michelob franchise. "There will always be a place for 'Big Lager' as it's more drinkable in the sense that one can have many lagers but only a few dark beers," says Euromonitor International analyst Edward Hsyeh. "The dark beers are heavy in body, so there can only be so much 'share of the stomach' they possess." Still, big challenges loom: First, Americans' growing thirst for darker, more flavorful brews can't be ignored. Volume sales of lager-a lighter style of beer-have fallen every year since 2009 except 2012, according to Euromonitor's data, though the vast majority of beer consumed in the U.S. is still lager. Sales of pale ales, on the other hand, were up by 13 percent in 2013 alone, and wheat beer grew by 6 percent. The shift is reflected in the recent craft beer boom (volume sales grew 13 percent in the first half of 2013) in which India Pale Ale has become popular. Second, aside from craft, the big brands are seeing competition from imports, too. Modelo Especial volume sales, for example, more than doubled since 2009, according to IRI, and sales of Corona were up 11 percent. Last, hard ciders and new beer-like varieties such as AB InBev's (BUD) Bud Light Lime Straw-Ber-Rita, which sold more than 7 million cases since launching last

Shares of Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST ) rose nearly 5% Monday after the company's board of directors approved a $200 million share repurchase program. As management stated recently, the company had already used every penny of the $250 million it authorized for share repurchases less than five months ago, so it looks like they were just itching to continue increasing shareholders' slice of the pie.

Finally, energy-drink maker Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST ) charged 4.7% higher after its board of directors approved a $200 million share repurchase program. The previous share repurchase program of $250 million had been used in its entirety. This move should somewhat help bolster shares that have suffered due to an FDA probe into the safety of its energy drinks and the threat of increased government regulation looming over the entire sector. As for me, I still see multiple reasons to avoid Monster altogether.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Tony Reading]
I'm less familiar with South African-based SABMiller (LSE: SAB ) (NASDAQOTH: SBMRY ) , though its market cap is slightly larger than Diageo after its shares are up 50% over the year. I think of it as expensive, but a quick check on my data provider shows the two shares equally rated with prospective price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios of 19.7 and yields of 2.3% for Diageo and 2.2% for SABMiller. So maybe it's time to do a little portfolio rebalancing.

"No one wants to annoy the consumer," Bill Bean, director of tradeinsight at SAB Miller (NASDAQOTH: SBMRY ) , told the New York Times."However, there are many annoying ads that sell products, and it's very difficult to tell what annoys one consumer and what pleases another."

Luckily, there is another way. The FTSE 100 contains a number of companies whose earnings come from these countries. Two great examples are Diageo (LSE: DGE ) (NYSE: DEO ) and SABMiller (LSE: SAB ) (NASDAQOTH: SBMRY ) , which sell spirits and beer, respectively, and have global operations providing exactly the kind of emerging-market exposure I'm looking for.

Who knew that consolidation speculation in the beer industry could be sung to the tune of the Butthole Surfers’ “Pepper.” SABMiller (SBMRY) wants to buy Heineken (HEINY). Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) might want to buy SABMiller. And Molson Coors Brewing (TAP) might scoop up the leftovers.
