Portfolio Manager Bill Hench talks about what he looks for in potential investments, how the recent housing recovery exemplifies some of his investment themes, and why he sees potential in retail as year-end approaches.
See the video here.
hat we like to do is get very good companies at very, very good prices, says Portfolio Manager Bill Hench. n order to do that, the companies that we buy usually have a problem. Usually it a short-term problem that we hope will get addressed over a year-and-a-half to two-year period.br>Exemplifying some of Bill opportunistic investment themeshich in addition to turnarounds include emerging growth companies with interrupted earnings patterns, companies with unrecognized asset values, and undervalued growth companiess the recent housing market.
lot of [housing related companies] turned out to be asset plays where we thought that the land on the books and the cash were being undervalued by the market, says Bill. e had builders, we had financing companies, we had software companies, and, to a large extent, they all had the same characteristics: they had very, very low valuations and very, very low expectations going forward,He adds.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By John Emerson]
My selection of stocks was now almost entirely based upon themes. Instead of seeking out value in out-favor-sectors, I had temporarily diverted to the path of attempting to identify investing themes, although I would only purchase a stock if I deemed it to be a bargain. The major themes I had identified were natural gas related stocks, material stocks such as cement companies, and discounted Chinese growth stocks which made their money by selling their products to Chinese consumers. I also owned significant positions in some other purely American companies which included Casey (CASY) and Gray Television (GTN). Ultimately, Gray Television would turn out to be a colossal failure (more on GTN later).

It been a mighty weird year for Casey General Stores (CASY). The company has had some tough quarters, but just when things are looking bleak, the team got some runners on base and drove a few home.

Casey's General Stores (Nasdaq: CASY ) is expected to report Q4 earnings around June 12. Here's what Wall Street wants to see:
The 10-second takeaway
Comparing the upcoming quarter to the prior-year quarter, average analyst estimates predict Casey's General Stores's revenues will expand 4.5% and EPS will expand 3.3%. - [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM] Slow but steady -- that seems to be the new mantra here on Wall Street. The Dow Industrials and the S&P 500 plowed further into record territory on Friday. The catalyst for today's advance was the monthly jobs report, which showed the total number of people employed finally topped the 2008 peak it hit just before the Great Recession took hold. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) gained 88 points, the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) rose 9, and the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) gained 25 points. Financial stocks helped lead the advance. Goldman Sachs (GS) and American Express (AXP) both gained more than 2 percent. Bank of America (BAC) rose 1 percent on reports that it's in talks with the Justice Department to settle another set of probes into the bank's handling of mortgages leading up to and during the financial crisis. News reports say the company could pay more than $12 billion, which is more than it earned in all of 2013. But this could allow Bank of America to finally put this long-running problem behind it. Its stock has been virtually flat over the past 6 months. Amazon (AMZN) posted a strong gain for second straight day, rising 2 percent, on indications that it's about to enter the smartphone business. And Sears (SHLD) gained nearly 2 percent on a Reuters report that the company's chairman has held talks with outgoing Ford (F) CEO Alan Mulally, sparking rumors that he might head the retailer's turnaround effort. Elsewhere, Hertz (HRZ) drove into a ditch, sliding 9 percent after saying it will restate earnings from 2011 through 2013 because of accounting issues. Diamond Foods (DMND) fell 11 percent. Its quarterly loss widened, due to higher wholesale prices for nuts. But Vail Resorts (MTN), Men's Wearhouse (MW), and VeriFone (PAY) all gained after beating expectations. Vail was up 6 percent; Men's Wearhouse rose 5½ percent; and VeriFone jumped 9 percent. Demand for its merchant payment systems has been helped by growing con

On the other hand, toward the top of the return list, you'll find many old-economy stocks that were largely out of favor in 2000. Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI ) has soared almost 2,500% since then, having overcome the threat of major tobacco-litigation losses largely unscathed. Pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts (NASDAQ: ESRX ) has climbed more than 2,200%, with several health-insurance companies also posting strong performance as the health-care industry has changed to favor companies that help manage costs of providing medical services.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Rick Aristotle Munarriz]
Taco Bell/AP There will be a new player in the escalating battle for breakfast on Thursday when Yum Brands' (YUM) Taco Bell rolls out its new morning menu, and the stakes are huge. McDonald's (MCD) is the name that most people associate with breakfast fast food. Ever since it introduced the Egg McMuffin in 1972, the world's largest burger flipper has set the bar for convenient morning meals for people on the go. The Waffle Taco will likely be Taco Bell's signature breakfast item. The taco-shaped waffle wrapped around a sausage patty, scrambled eggs and cheese turned heads when it was tested in select locations late last year. However, it's just one of the many items wooing commuters. Naturally there will be eggy breakfast burritos and grilled tacos with either bacon or sausage. The A.M. Crunchwrap gives a morning spin to the Crunchwrap Supreme by blanketing hash browns, scrambled eggs and either bacon or sausage in a pressed and folded flour tortilla. Tough Competition McDonald's is struggling these days, but it's still a fierce competitor when it comes to the first meal of the day. Just ask Burger King (BKW), which finds itself copying McDonald's more often than not, including hotcakes served with sausage and the Egg McMuffin. Just ask Wendy's (WEN), which retreated from its nationwide breakfast menu a couple of years ago. It's starting to work its way back in by introducing breakfast in some markets. Even Starbucks (SBUX) has been feeling the threat of McDonald's as the burger giant beefs up its McCafe line, offering guests drive-thru convenience that many Starbucks locations cannot. Earlier this month Starbucks ran a three-day promotion where it offered free coffee to anyone ordering a breakfast sandwich. It was meant to remind customers that it offers more than just java. Breakfast seems like an easy decision for a fast food leader. Who wouldn't want to milk more revenue out of a location by extending its operating hours? However, with Wendy's coming

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jeremy Bowman]
What: Shares of The Pantry (NASDAQ: PTRY ) were down as much as 15% today after the convenience-store chain posted a second-quarter loss and missed Wall Street estimates.
- [By Sean Williams]
Much of the same can be said about The Pantry (NASDAQ: PTRY ) , a predominantly Southeastern U.S. convenience store chain that operates under the Kangaroo Express name. Food inflation has been minimal, the weather hasn't been as cooperative, and consumer traffic fell 4.6% in its most recent quarter. But where other investors see weakness, I see an opportunity.
