The spread of estimates of how holiday sales did over the period from Black Friday through Cyber Monday is wide.� NRF�reported that�Thanksgiving Holiday spending reached $57.4 billion, which was a slight disappointment. Comscore reported that online spending from the start of November through December 11 was higher by 9% to $31.5 billion. (The research firm added that the number of weekends in 2013 was��different from last year, so perhaps online spending was really up 25%). Individual retailers have reported numbers which range from fantastic to horrible. Whatever the correct data are, the holiday retail sales season has gone from a marathon which started on November 1 to a sprint with only 10 days to go.
If the level of discounts offered by Walmart�(NYSE: WMT) is any indication, the largest retailer in the world has decided to continue to�use free shipping, which�can be�costly for the retailer, as a means to�gain customers. Its most attractive offer, at least for people who do not want to wait until the very last moment, is free shipping on any order of $35 or more. The catch, and there are several,�is that it will take 6 to 9 business days for those orders to arrive–which means they may barely make it before sundown on the 24th. Walmart�does not say what it costs to get orders as fast as it can deliver them–1 to 2 business days, Customers have to check directly with the retailer. The�cost may be too shockingly high for most Walmart�shoppers. So, does Walmart�really take much of a financial risk on shipping? Maybe not, when the fees are broken down by category.

Most folks may have tired of the video and the song ages ago, but clips live on forever in cyberspace. YouTube just validated itself again. MySpace -- Loser Speaking of bringing pop stars to life, MySpace -- yes, MySpace -- turned heads this week by sending out old photos posted years ago to the emails of folks with dormant accounts. MySpace had its moment in the sun before giving way to Facebook (FB), but the social networking dinosaur now jointly owned by Specific Media and pop icon Justin Timberlake, is struggling to regain its relevance. Sending old pics to folks that have moved on may seem like a clever tactic given the popularity of Throwback Thursday, but it comes off desperate at best, and creepy at worst. Panera Bread (PNRA) -- Winner Panera became the latest eatery to climb onto the organic food bandwagon this week. The chain of bakery cafes revised its food policy, moving to do rid its menu of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives by 2016. It's a smart move for Panera. Growth at the former quick-service darling has been slowing lately, with analysts targeting top- and bottom-line growth in the mid-single digits. Movers and shakers: Alcoa Inc. (AA) �shares dropped 5.4% after the aluminum producer said it swung to a fourth-quarter loss. The firm also said Thursday it had settled charges of corruption in Bahrain with a $384 million payout to the Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice. Abercrombie & Fitch�� shares (ANF) �rallied 12% after the firm raised its full-year adjusted earnings projections. Gap Inc. (GPS) � gained 1.1% after saying it expects full-year earnings near the top of its projected range of $2.57 to $2.65. The firm also said same-store sales in December were flat, missing expectations of a 1.5% increase, according to a survey of analysts by Thomson Reuters. Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD) �disappointed the market with plunging same-store sales, sending its shares tumbling 13.8% Friday. The company said it had a 7.4% decline in quarter-to-date holiday-season comparable sales. Five Below Inc. (FIVE) �tanked 7.2% after updating its guidance for the three months ended January 4. The retailer said it now expects adjusted per share profit to be between 44 cents and 46 cents. In December, the firm said it expected adjusted profit of 49 cents to 51 cents.

The last of today's laggards, beleaguered retailer J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP ) , stumbled 3.1%. With official quarterly earnings set to come in next Monday, the company seems to be doing a bit of expectation management. Preliminary sales figures came in 16% lower than a year ago, aptly disappointing because the recently ousted CEO decided to do away with sales initiatives. On the brighter side, sales are returning to the retailer, and shareholders can at least be hopeful for a brighter future under new leadership.
